WASHINGTON—AARP has been named one of Fast Company’s 2020 Best Workplaces for Innovators. Now in its second annual year, the list honors businesses and organizations that demonstrate a deep commitment to encouraging innovation at all levels.
AARP ranked #14 for its work through AARP Innovation Labs to help shape the future of aging, promote healthy aging, support family caregivers, and help older Americans build financial resilience and combat social isolation. These efforts include AARP’s recently launched Community Connections interactive website, which helps users organize and find local volunteer groups to help pick up groceries, provide financial assistance, or lend emotional support to neighbors, friends, and loved ones amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“AARP employees are empowered to be everyday innovators in aging and spark real solutions that meet older adults and their families’ needs of tomorrow,” said AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins. “Innovation is a key to our work to protect and help tens of millions of older Americans in their lives and through this pandemic, so we couldn’t be prouder to be recognized among Fast Company’s Best Workplaces for Innovators.”
Developed in collaboration with Accenture, the 2020 Best Workplaces for Innovators ranks 100 winners from a variety of industries, including computer science, biotech, consumer packaged goods, nonprofit, education, financial services, cybersecurity, and engineering. Working together, Fast Company editors and Accenture researchers scored nearly 900 applications, and a panel of eight eminent judges reviewed and endorsed the top 100 companies—an increase from last year’s list of 50. The 2020 awards feature workplaces from around the world with several of the honorees based outside the U.S.
“As much of the world recovers from health, economic, and social crises, we need innovation more than ever,” says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “This new list of the Best Workplaces for Innovators celebrates organizations that have fostered innovative thinking by investing in technology, research and development, and their employees.”
In addition, AARP was recognized as a finalist for Fast Company’s 2020 Innovative Team of the Year list, a new category within its annual Best Workplaces for Innovators list, which highlights the most innovative teams—groups of employees, nominated by their companies, that took advantage of a pro-innovation environment to build or develop something extraordinary.
